Obituary for Olive Riley (Spence)

Olive (Spence) Riley, 91, a longtime resident of Carthage, IN, died Thursday, December 27,
2018 in Greenfield, IN.
Funeral services will be at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, at Heritage Funeral Care in
Knightstown, IN. Visitation from 4 - 6 pm prior to the service.
Olive was born January 13, 1927, on a farm near Lewis, KY, to the late Clarence and Anna
(Gulley) Spence. She married Tony E. Riley in 1944, and the couple resided at Carthage for
more than 50 years. They were the parents of Janice (Riley) Fannin Clark.
In her early adult life Olive worked for a time at the old Carthage Paper Mill. Later, she operated
a custom cake shop out of her home for many years. The Rileys were foster parents to several
children in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, Olive and Tony relocated to Shelbyville, IN. Following
the deaths of Tony in 2009 and Janice in 2010, Olive relocated to Greenfield. She was also
preceded in death by all 13 of her brothers and sisters.
Survivors include grandsons, Boyd Fannin of Indiana and Rodney Fannin of Colorado; great
grandchildren Clay, Wyatt, Garrett and Baileigh Fannin and Brittney (Fannin) Hardy; great great
grandchildren, Ethan and Aria Hardy along with a host of nieces and nephews. She was
particularly close to nieces, Bernita (Logan) Fouts of Texas and Vivian (Nolan) Wayland of
Florida. Olive will be buried between Tony and Janice at Riverside Cemetery near Carthage, IN
