Obituary for Gregory Paul "Greg" Latz

Gregory Paul “Greg” Latz, 60, of Carthage, Indiana, passed away on the morning of Friday, May 17, 2019, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He spent his final days at home surrounded by his loving family.

Greg was born on March 18, 1959, in Dallas, Texas, to the late George Joseph and Betty Jean (Manley) Latz.

He was a 1977 graduate of Monona Grove High School in Monona, Wisconsin, and a 1984 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a BS in Agricultural Mechanization and Management. He was united in marriage to Jane Elizabeth Gedemer on April 4, 1987, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Canyon Lake, Texas. Upon moving to Indianapolis, Greg worked at the Bike Line in Broad Ripple and was then employed with Geupel DeMars, Inc., providing construction management services for clients such as Eli Lilly and Company and the Indianapolis International Airport Authority. Following the birth of his first child, he became a stay at home dad and home-educated his children. His primary priorities were his Catholic Faith and his beloved family. Some of his favorite activities included camaraderie and lively intellectual conversation with family and friends around the dinner table, home-schooling field trips, biking, hiking, skiing, cross-country travel with family, and a wide variety of “fix-it” projects with his children. He was a man of many interests, including severe storm spotting and amateur radio (W9KCP), local and family history, and railroading. He volunteered for the Carthage, Knightstown, and Shirley Railroad for many years and was a member of the North American Railcar Operators Association (NARCOA). Greg was active for a number of years in the Indianapolis Catholic Homeschooling Apostolate (ICHSA) and was a founding and longtime member of the Latin Mass choir and men’s schola at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Indianapolis. He had been a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greenwood since 2012, where he served as treasurer.

Those left to cherish Greg’s memory include his wife of 32 years, Jane Elizabeth Latz, as well as four children: Theresa Marie Latz of Carthage; Kristina Anne Latz of St. Mary’s, Kansas; Michael Joseph Latz of St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, Dillwyn, Virginia; and Thomas Justin Latz of Carthage; two sisters, Beverly (Rene) Hernandez of San Antonio, Texas, and Nancy (Brad) Adams of Sedro Woolley, Washington; and an aunt, Rose Adele (Latz) Tobben of Washington, Missouri. He will also be missed by a host of relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Greg was preceded in death by a preterm infant, Gabrielle Jean.
