Obituary for Gary K. Stewart

Gary K. Stewart, 89, of Greenfield, passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, November 25, 2022 at Hancock Regional Health in Greenfield.

He was born on June 3, 1933 in Carthage, Indiana, a son of the late Gerald and Mabel (Ruby) Stewart.

Gary graduated from Carthage High School in 1951 where he played basketball and ran track. He served his country in the United States Army and earned the rank of Second Lieutenant. Gary married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Miller, on June 17, 1953. Gary was an athlete and enjoyed watching or playing all sports especially men’s softball. As a young man, he also took a trip out west and hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Gary was a skilled trades inspector 33 years for Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors Corporation. He retired at the age of 55, which gave him the opportunity to travel and do volunteer work. Gary and Barbara traveled across Europe, Hawaii and most of the United States visiting former U.S. Presidents’ homes and American history landmarks. A highlight of their marriage included an entire family Caribbean Cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. For several summers, Gary, Barbara, and daughters enjoyed an annual trip to Shipshewana Flea Market and dining at Das Dutchman Essenhaus restaurant. Gary took part for many years in planning the Carthage Fall Festival and was an active member of Carthage Lions Club, American Legion and currently attended Mt. Comfort Church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 69 years, Barbara (Miller) Stewart; three daughters, Cindy (Bruce) Kendall, Terri (Buddy) Grimm and Missy (Jeff) McAllister; seven grandchildren, Josh (Jackie) Kendall, Jessica (David) Evans, Jordan Kendall, Megan Grimm, Matthew (Kacie) Grimm, Lexi McAllister and Baylee McAllister; five great-grandchildren, Eli, Ramona, Tilda, Carter, and Kirsten.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Morris and Rosalind Stephens.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Heritage Funeral Care in Knightstown. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery.
