Dale Phillip May, 90, of Knightstown, passed away on the evening of Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Walker Place Assisted Living in Shelbyville.

He was born on December 21, 1927 in Fayette County on the family farm, a son of the late Charles J. and Ester (Adams) May.

Dale was a 1946 graduate of Orange High School and soon after joined the U.S. Army for two years followed by the U.S. Air Force for three years. He served as a Tech Sergeant in the Strategic Air Department (SAC) during the Korean Conflict. After honorably serving his country, Dale traveled several months at a time driving semi-trucks across country for Diechbrader and Mayflower transportation companies. On July 12, 1957, he married his first love, Lettie Irene Jackson, they enjoyed 49 wonderful years together until her passing in 2006. In 2008, Dale remarried, Arlene Kapler, before her passing in 2015.

Dale was a hard worker and skilled at many trades. He retired from Ford Motor Company as a pipe fitter after 28 years. During that time, he also owned and operated a plumbing and heating contracting company, remodeled and built several homes, member of the V.F.W and former commander of the American Legion Post #152 from ’83-’84. Dale was past President of the Charles A. Beard School Board, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge beginning at Lodge #580 and an Elder of the East Street Christian Church in Carthage.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Jerry B. (Ruth) May, Robert D. (Cindy) May, Steven C. (Kathy) May and Loretta Dyke; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and extended family in Michigan.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Lettie Jackson and second wife, Arlene Kapler; a son, Jeffrey May; brothers, Frank and Charles May.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Heritage Funeral Care in Knightstown with Pastor David Bonne officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery with military honors conducted by contingents from the U.S. Airforce, V.F.W. and American Legion Post #152.

Friends may call from 4 – 8 pm on Monday, April 2, 2018 at the funeral home with Masonic Rights to begin at 7:00 pm.
